Music is Everywhere

Music is everywhere:  in concert halls, in music classes, in our natural environment, on our body...  Last week, K, Grade 1 and 2 continued to build on their knowledge of body percussion.  They listened to From Head to Toe by Eric Carle and tried to decide which actions were "good" body percussion and which ones were not.  Some classes proceeded to creating their original body percussion effects.  We will be using these sound effects to create original soundscapes.

Grade 3 and 4 students learned about the concept of "intervals" which, in music, means "the distance between two notes."  Grade 4 students started putting different intervals together and had their first exposure to the concept of "harmony."

Gonna Sing a Song!

During the past week, students focused on reviewing some of the concepts they have learned from last year:

  • Kindergarten students focused on creative expression through singing.  They responded to high/low music, sound/silence through movement;
  • Grade 1 students reviewed basic concepts such as body percussion and vocal qualities;
  • Grade 2 students told the story of Three Billy Goats Gruff through instruments;
  • Grade 3 students created a soundscape to go with Wind Song by Lillian Moore;
  • Grade 4 students reviewed the concept of ticka-ticka and told the musical story of Salamanca Market
Notices about Grade 3/4 choir (Tuesday rehearsals) and Grade 5/6 choir (Wednesday rehearsals) will be going home.  If you are interested in joining, please fill out and return the tear-off slip by the deadline.

Welcome Back!

Hope you had a fantastic summer.  For those of you who have not met me, my name is Ms. Ling.  This is my third year teaching Elementary music at Elboya School.  I will be seeing Kindergarten to Grade 4 students for music.  In addition to teaching music, I have expanded my teaching role this year to include teaching Grade 1-4 FSL (French as a Second Language.)

For those who are passionate about singing, I am happy to tell you that there will be a Grade 3/4 choir.  A notice will go home soon.  Stay tuned for more detail!
